The compostable plant-based cups and plastic-free mulch films showing up in garden centers rely on exactly this kind of microbial breakdown to actually disappear in your compost pile instead of lingering for years.

Researchers grew two kinds of bacteria on tiny beads of PLA, a corn-based bioplastic used in things like compostable cups and packaging. When the two bacteria worked together, they broke chemical bonds in the plastic's surface faster than either species working alone, apparently by sharing leftover metabolic products like lactate. The finding suggests that combining specific microbes could help compostable plastics break down more reliably and quickly.
