The soil in community gardens and roadside plots can carry traces of phthalates leached from plastic mulch and irrigation tubing, and this microbial cleanup crew points toward a low-cost way to break that pollution down before it reaches your vegetables.

Researchers gathered a mix of soil bacteria and trained them to eat a chemical called DBP, which is used to make plastics flexible and shows up in mulch film, packaging, and even cosmetics. The bacterial team wiped out 99% of the chemical in five days, worked across a wide range of soil temperatures and acidity levels, and could also break down a related plastic chemical and several fungicides. The scientists even figured out which enzyme does the heavy lifting and how it grabs onto the pollutant molecule.

The microbial consortium removed 99.07% of di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) within 120 hours, outperforming any single bacterial strain tested.

The community worked reliably across pH 5-10 and temperatures 20-38°C, and also degraded di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP) and multiple strobilurin fungicides.

Structural modeling identified a catalytic triad (Ser113-Asp166-His197) in the key enzyme CES1281 responsible for breaking down the pollutant.
