The fertilizer or compost spread on farms and community gardens from municipal food-waste collection may contain plastic bits, even when the packaging you tossed in the bin was labeled compostable.
When cities collect food scraps and yard waste, they often process it in big tanks called anaerobic digesters, which turn the waste into biogas energy and a soil fertilizer called digestate. Many food packages are now labeled 'biodegradable' or 'compostable' on the assumption they'll vanish in this process, but researchers reviewing dozens of studies found these plastics frequently don't fully break down under real digester conditions. That means fragments can end up in the fertilizer that eventually gets spread on soil, undermining the very recycling loop the packaging was designed to support.
