Indigo carmine is a blue dye used in textiles and food coloring that doesn't break down easily once it gets into rivers and wastewater. Researchers compared several cleanup methods and found that materials made from plants, like charcoal from burned plant matter (biochar), crab-shell fiber (chitosan), and plant cellulose, work alongside fungal enzymes to soak up or break down the dye. The review suggests combining these plant-derived materials with light-activated catalysts could offer a cheaper, gentler way to detoxify contaminated water.
