Certain insect larvae can already munch through plastic, but they leave behind tiny plastic fragments mixed into their droppings, which isn't great for the environment. Researchers suggest using the chitin from the insects' shed skins to capture those leftover plastic bits, then letting engineered microbes finish breaking them down into useful materials. It's a way to close the loop so plastic waste doesn't just get moved around, it actually gets used up.
