Wetland filters built with charcoal and minerals clean up hidden water pollutants

The reeds and rushes lining a retention pond or treatment marsh near you are doing real chemical cleanup work, and swapping plain gravel for biochar or zeolite in those systems turns a mediocre filter into one that strips out nearly all traces of pharmaceuticals and personal care chemicals.

Scientists reviewed how built wetlands, essentially engineered marshes with layers of soil, gravel, and plants, break down modern pollutants like leftover medicines and antibiotics that regular treatment plants miss. The trick is combining different flow zones so microbes get pockets of oxygen-rich, oxygen-poor, and root-zone conditions, each favoring different pollutant-eating bacteria. Upgrading the filter material from plain gravel to things like charcoal, volcanic rock, or iron-coated particles made a huge difference, pushing removal from barely 20-30% up to 90% or more.

Conventional gravel and sand substrates remove less than 20-30% of dissolved emerging contaminants, while biochar, zeolite, and lightweight expanded clay aggregate (LECA) boost removal to 60-90%.
