Biochar is basically charcoal made by heating plant material, like wood or crop leftovers, without much oxygen. Researchers found that mixing this charcoal with tiny metal particles turns it into a sponge-and-catalyst combo that can soak up and break down a nasty industrial pollutant called 4-nitrophenol, which shows up in wastewater from drug, dye and leather factories. The review found these plant-derived materials work better than older cleanup methods, though scientists still need to figure out how to keep the metal from leaching out and how to scale up production cheaply.
