The runoff carrying trace pesticides and drug residues into your local stream could one day be cleaned up by bacteria scientists can now find and identify far faster than before.
Researchers reviewed the best ways to find bacteria that eat modern pollutants, things like leftover medications and personal care chemicals that end up in soil and water. Older methods relied on slowly growing cultures in the lab, but newer techniques let scientists check individual bacterial cells for both their identity and their pollution-eating activity at the same time, using tricks like glowing tags, tracking isotopes, and laser light scans. Combining these approaches should make it much quicker to find microbes useful for cleaning up contaminated sites.
