If you've ever wondered what happens to industrial chemical spills near old manufacturing sites, this bacterium shows soil itself can host microbes capable of breaking down stubborn pollutants before they reach groundwater or nearby gardens.
Researchers found a bacterium living in polluted soil in Brazil that can eat a nasty industrial chemical called 4-IPNB, used in making pesticides, and turn it into harmless byproducts. The bacterium strips off the toxic nitrogen part of the molecule first, then breaks down what's left using its own enzymes, even when tested in real dirt rather than a lab dish. This kind of microbial cleanup crew could one day help restore soil at contaminated industrial sites without digging it all up.
