The mushrooms and fine white threads you might glimpse when digging in your garden soil are part of a fungal network that most plant roots negotiate with constantly, deciding case by case whether to keep feeding them.
Most plants team up with soil fungi that help them absorb nutrients in exchange for sugar, a partnership called mycorrhizal symbiosis. This paper argues that plants aren't just passive hosts, they actively screen which fungi get in, control how much fungal tissue builds up inside root cells, and can shut down or renew individual fungal connections over time. The authors also point out that scientists haven't yet proven plants can judge and punish underperforming fungi at the level of a single connection, so some of this 'control' is still more assumption than proven fact.
