Popular land maps mislead scientists studying stream health

The strip of trees and shrubs along a creek or river near you does more to protect water quality than official land maps give it credit for, and getting that wrong can mean the wrong conservation decisions get made.
Scientists rely on land cover maps to figure out how forests, farms, and rivers interact, but this study found that the widely-used maps get a lot wrong, especially in the narrow strips of vegetation that hug streams and rivers. Using satellite images and computer learning, the researchers built a more accurate 40-year record for five watersheds in Spain and found the standard maps often misrepresented how vegetation along waterways changed over time. That gap matters because those green corridors are critical for keeping rivers healthy, and bad data means people managing land could be making decisions based on a false picture.
Key Findings
Custom satellite-based classification (Random Forest method) achieved 87.8% average accuracy across four decades, outperforming standard CORINE and SIOSE land cover products.
Errors in standard land cover maps grew larger at finer spatial scales, especially in riparian corridors (the vegetation strips along waterways) compared to whole-catchment scales.
Standard maps showed poor long-term consistency, often misrepresenting actual trends in land cover change over the 1984-2023 study period.
