Scientists used to think flowers were mostly protected from environmental changes because reproduction is too important to leave vulnerable. This review pulls together evidence that heat actually reprograms flower development, changing petal size, flower number, and timing, through identifiable genetic pathways. Understanding those pathways could help breeders design crops and garden plants that keep flowering reliably as the climate warms.
