DNA tracking confirms passion fruit breeding restores prized traits

If you've ever grown passion fruit vines and lost them to disease, this research is part of the pipeline that breeds tougher, wild-crossed varieties without sacrificing the sweet fruit you actually want.
Breeders sometimes cross a favorite fruit plant with a tough wild relative to pick up disease resistance, but they want to keep the fruit's original good qualities too. This study used genetic markers to check whether repeated backcrossing (breeding hybrids back to the original commercial passion fruit) actually works to restore those desirable traits while still keeping the disease resistance and genetic diversity intact. It found the method does what it's supposed to: hybrids bred back several generations ended up genetically closer to the original commercial parent, just as breeders hoped.
