A friendly fungus helps chilli plants fight off root rot

Chilli plants often get killed by a soil fungus called Rhizoctonia solani, which rots their roots from below. Scientists tested a different, helpful fungus called Trichoderma virens and found it can fight off the harmful one, keeping the chilli plants healthier. It's a promising, low-chemical way to protect a favorite spicy crop.
