Genes come with little instruction snippets called uORFs that usually slow down how much protein gets made. Researchers studying Arabidopsis (a small mustard plant used in labs) found that cells often start reading a gene's message from a slightly different starting point, one that skips over these instruction snippets entirely. That's why genes predicted to have these slowdown signals often don't actually experience them in real life, solving a long-standing puzzle about why plants keep these seemingly counterproductive elements around.
