Organic fertilizer helps trap toxic cadmium away from vegetable crops

If you grow vegetables in soil with any contamination history, this shows that feeding your garden with compost or manure rather than synthetic fertilizer alone can actually help keep heavy metals out of your harvest.

Cadmium is a toxic metal that can linger in soil and get absorbed by crops like pak choi. Researchers tested different ways to lock the cadmium in place and found that combining an organic-mineral soil treatment with ongoing organic fertilizer use worked best, not because it removed more cadmium from the soil, but because it changed the community of microbes living around plant roots. Those microbes built a sticky, protective layer and precipitated minerals that physically blocked cadmium from reaching the roots, resulting in the lowest cadmium levels found in the harvested vegetable.

Continued organic fertilizer substitution reduced shoot cadmium accumulation in pak choi by up to 58.3%, while mineral fertilizer alone caused cadmium to remobilize.

The best-performing treatment enriched specific soil microbes (including Pelagerythrobacter and Sphingomicrobium) with genes for EPS secretion and phosphate precipitation, producing high EPS content (259.88 mg/kg) and the lowest plant cadmium level (2.83 mg/kg).
