Sludge compost fixes salty soil but shifts mercury risks around

If you've ever added compost or biosolids to improve tough soil in a garden bed, this shows that how you manage water afterward, whether you keep it wet or let it drain, changes what happens to contaminants already lurking in that soil.

Sewage sludge compost is great at improving salty, degraded soil because it's packed with nutrients, but it also carries mercury. Researchers tested this compost on salt-affected farmland and found that when the soil stays flooded, tiny microbes convert some of that mercury into methylmercury, a more toxic and bioavailable form. When the soil is allowed to dry out instead, more mercury escapes into the air as vapor rather than building up in the ground or water.

Total mercury content in the soil decreased after sludge compost application, but the proportion of mobile, labile mercury species and humic-bound mercury increased.

Flooded conditions boosted mercury-methylating microbial activity and increased the net methylation rate in surface soil, raising methylmercury formation risk.

Non-flooded conditions increased dissolved total mercury in soil pore water and promoted elemental mercury (Hg0) release into the atmosphere, while flooding suppressed this release.
