Mineral combo slashes toxic cadmium buildup in wheat grain

If you've ever worried about heavy metals in bread wheat or garden soil near old industrial sites, this points to a low-tech soil amendment that locks cadmium away before it ever reaches the food you eat.

Cadmium is a toxic metal that can build up in soils and get pulled into food crops like wheat, which is a real problem in slightly alkaline farmland. Researchers found that treating soil with a manganese-carbonate mineral, plus a little extra carbonate, traps cadmium in a form plants can't easily absorb. The result was wheat grain with far less cadmium, plus healthier, bigger plants, thanks to a mix of soil chemistry and the plant's own manganese defenses against the metal.

MnCO3 alone reduced wheat grain cadmium by 40.1%, and adding supplemental carbonate boosted the reduction to 51.0%-57.2%.

Supplemental carbonate increased carbonate-bound (immobilized) cadmium in soil by 2.9%-13.5% while cutting DTPA- and TCLP-extractable (plant-available) cadmium by up to 66.0%.

MnCO3 raised soil manganese availability, strengthened manganese-cadmium antagonism in the plant, and shifted rhizosphere microbial communities toward metal-resistance functions.
