If you garden near coastal areas or use tap water high in salts, this points to a non-chemical technique on the horizon that could someday help your vegetable beds shrug off salty conditions that normally stunt growth.

Scientists exposed pea plants to a brief zap of cold plasma (a gas charged with electricity) before growing them in salty soil, and the treated plants grew noticeably better than untreated ones. The plasma seemed to switch on the plant's own antioxidant defenses and even triggered protective changes in the roots, like extra waterproofing layers, that helped the plant cope with the stress. It's an early sign that this quick electrical treatment could help crops tolerate salty farmland without needing extra chemicals.
