The tomatoes and peppers in your raised bed are constantly trading chemical signals with fungi and bacteria in the soil, and understanding that conversation could mean less fertilizer and sturdier plants during a heat wave or dry spell.

Plants aren't fighting climate stress alone: microscopic bacteria and fungi living around their roots help them grab nutrients, fend off disease, and cope with drought or heat by triggering the plant's own defense chemicals. Researchers are now using powerful gene-sequencing tools and artificial intelligence to figure out exactly which microbes do what, so they can eventually design custom microbial mixes farmers could add to soil like a probiotic for crops. The goal is healthier soil and tougher plants without piling on more synthetic chemicals.
