Fertilized kudzu vines build richer soil life on old mines

If you've ever tried to green up a rough patch of dead soil, this shows that pairing the right climbing plant with fertilizer can jumpstart the invisible bacterial workforce that rebuilds soil health from the ground up.

Researchers planted six different vining plants, like kudzu, hyacinth bean, and a morning glory relative, on land wrecked by iron mining, then compared what happened to the soil bacteria with and without fertilizer. Fertilized soil ended up with way more types of bacteria overall, and one vine in particular, Pueraria montana (a kudzu relative), grew the richest and most diverse bacterial community when fed fertilizer. The takeaway is that both the plant you choose and whether you feed it can reshape the hidden microbial life that makes ruined soil livable again.
