The amount and quality of light hitting your tomatoes or houseplants doesn't just affect growth, it actively shapes which soil microbes thrive around their roots and how well the plant fights off disease.
Plants have light-sensing proteins that do more than tell them when to grow, they also help plants decide how to interact with the trillions of microbes living on and around them. This review explains that light exposure changes a plant's immune defenses, thickens or thins its waxy outer coating, and shifts what sugars and chemicals it sends into the soil, all of which determine which microbes stick around as friends versus foes. Understanding this could let farmers and gardeners use light management, like shade cloth or grow lights, to encourage healthier plant-microbe relationships.
