The tomatoes and wheat you rely on carry genetic backup copies from ancient crises millions of years ago, and scientists now want to use those same duplicated genes to engineer crops that survive future droughts and heat waves.

Millions of years ago, many flowering plants accidentally copied their entire genetic instruction book, usually right around major environmental disasters. Instead of getting thrown away, certain gene families involved in stress responses got kept and reused over and over across totally different plant lineages. Researchers think studying this pattern could help them engineer sturdier, more climate-resistant crops using tools like CRISPR.
