Oyster mushroom waste fails to clean up old pesticide-tainted soil

If you've ever hoped that spreading spent mushroom compost on old farmland or a suspect backyard plot could magically detoxify decades-old pesticide residue, this study shows that trick doesn't work without real engineering behind it.
Oyster mushrooms are great at breaking down tough chemicals in a lab dish, so researchers wondered if leftover mushroom-growing material, essentially a farm waste product, could be spread on soil still contaminated with the old pesticide DDT decades after it was banned. They tried it both in test pots and out in an actual contaminated field, but the DDT levels barely budged either time. The mushrooms didn't thrive well enough in the real soil, and the DDT itself turned out to be so tightly bound to old soil particles that the fungi couldn't get at it.
