Ozone treatment turns ethanol industry waste into more biogas

The ethanol in your gas tank leaves behind a toxic, foamy sludge that's historically been hard to recycle into clean energy, and this method points toward turning agricultural waste streams into usable fuel instead of pollution.

When factories make ethanol from crops, they're left with a nasty, foamy liquid called vinasse that's full of compounds toxic to the microbes that would normally break it down into biogas. Researchers found that bubbling ozone gas through the vinasse under carefully tuned conditions, alongside a foam-suppressing chemical, neutralizes those toxic compounds and lets the leftover waste turn into 37.5% more methane fuel. It's a lab-scale fix, but it could help agricultural industries turn a messy waste problem into clean energy.
