Floating water plants can clean up dairy farm wastewater

The water hyacinth choking your local pond isn't just a nuisance weed, it's actively pulling pollutants out of the water it floats on.

Researchers floated water hyacinth and water lettuce in dairy wastewater to see how well they could clean it up. After 15 days, the plants soaked up a lot of the organic pollution and dissolved solids, with water hyacinth cutting one pollution measure by more than half. It's a low-cost, no-chemical way small dairy farms and rural towns could treat their wastewater using plants instead of expensive machinery.
