Contaminated soil is a real problem for community gardens and urban farms near old industrial sites, and this research points to a cheap, natural compound that could help plants grown there stay safer to eat.
Cadmium is a toxic metal that can build up in soil and get absorbed by plants, eventually ending up in the food we eat. Scientists found that treating a nightshade plant with melatonin, the same hormone that helps regulate sleep in humans, made the plant trap more cadmium in its cell walls instead of letting it travel up into stems and leaves. The plants also grew better and photosynthesized more efficiently, suggesting melatonin could be a practical way to help crops cope with contaminated soil.
Key Findings
Melatonin treatment (100 μmol L-1) restored biomass, photosynthetic rate, and Fv/Fm in cadmium-exposed Solanum nigrum while reducing cadmium levels in roots, stems, and leaves.
Cell-wall cadmium partitioning rose from 56.7% to 67.5% in roots and 55.1% to 66.5% in leaves, while organellar cadmium was roughly halved, indicating a shift toward safer sequestration.
Random forest modeling identified ascorbate levels, photosynthetic rate, and pectin-bound cadmium as the top predictors of cadmium tolerance, linking antioxidant and cell-wall pathways.
