Microbial slime could be the secret to healthier farm soil

The crumbly, water-holding structure you feel in good garden soil comes partly from sticky microbial secretions that glue soil particles together and trap contaminants before they reach your plants' roots.

Soil bacteria and fungi produce a sticky mix of sugars, proteins, and other molecules called EPS, kind of like a protective slime coat. This review shows that slime does three jobs: it shields the microbes themselves from stress, it helps soil form healthy clumps that hold water better, and it can trap heavy metals and pollutants so they don't spread. Scientists think engineering more of this natural slime could make farming more sustainable and help clean up contaminated land.
