This review shows that slime does three jobs: it shields the microbes themselves from stress, it helps soil form healthy clumps that hold water better, and it can trap heavy metals and pollutants so they don't spread. Scientists think engineering more of this natural slime could make farming more sustainable and help clean up contaminated land.
