Pond scum could soon fuel cars and wrap your groceries

The algae growing in a backyard pond or a home aquaculture setup isn't just pond scum, it's a raw material that researchers can turn into fuel, biodegradable plastic film, and other products from a single harvest, which is the kind of closed-loop thinking home composters and permaculture growers already practice at smaller scale.

Scientists reviewed dozens of studies on turning algae, both the tiny microscopic kind and the seaweed kind, into useful stuff like biodiesel, plastic-like films, and biogas. The big insight is that doing several of these processes together at once, instead of just making one product, cuts costs dramatically and makes better use of every part of the plant. Seaweed-based films even reach the strength of some conventional plastics, which is a promising sign for replacing packaging materials down the road.
