The wetland plants growing along ditches and retention ponds near industrial sites are quietly working with soil bacteria to break down toxic oil compounds before they reach rivers and groundwater.

Scientists reviewed a decade of studies on constructed wetlands, which are man-made marshy systems planted with wetland grasses and reeds, used to treat wastewater from oil refineries. The plant roots and the microbes living around them team up to break down or trap harmful petroleum chemicals, removing more than 90% of some pollutants like benzene. It's a low-tech, low-cost way to clean dirty water using nature's own tools instead of expensive chemical plants.
