That odd round growth on your oak leaf or rose stem isn't a disease or damage, it's a plant that's been chemically reprogrammed by an insect to grow a custom-built nursery.
Gall wasps lay eggs inside plant tissue and somehow convince the plant to grow a strange, ball-like structure around the larva, complete with its own food supply and protection. Scientists think the wasps release chemical signals that mess with the plant's natural growth hormones, tricking it into redirecting nutrients and building tissue it never would on its own. It's one of nature's most impressive examples of one species remote-controlling another's biology, and researchers still don't know exactly which wasp molecules pull the strings.
