In hybrid poplars, one parent's genes speak louder than the other's

If you've ever grafted or bred plants and wondered why offspring favor one parent's traits over the other, this cottonwood study shows the answer is written into which parent's copy of a gene the hybrid actually uses.

Scientists crossed two cottonwood tree species, one that makes lots of bitter defense chemicals and one that doesn't, and looked at which parent's genes the hybrid babies actually turned on. They found the trees don't blend their parents' genes evenly: genes for defense chemicals leaned toward one lineage, genes for photosynthesis leaned toward the other, and overall one parent's gene copies stayed more consistently active across generations. It's a bit like a hybrid child favoring one parent's habits for cooking and the other's for exercise, and it turns out the reason lies in small chemical tags and DNA switches near each gene.
