Citric acid seed soak helps okra shrug off nickel pollution

If you garden near old industrial land, roadways, or reclaimed soil where heavy metals linger, a cheap kitchen-cabinet acid could be the difference between a struggling crop and a productive one.

Nickel-contaminated soil stresses out plants and stunts their growth, which is a real problem for farmers on polluted land. Researchers found that simply soaking okra seeds in citric acid before planting gives the resulting plants a much better shot at handling that nickel stress: they grew stronger, held onto water better, and ramped up their internal defense chemicals. It's a low-cost, low-tech trick that could help make contaminated soil more farmable.
