Nearby pavement quietly thins out plant life in city forests

The pocket of trees behind your neighborhood or office isn't just shrinking when it gets fragmented; the pavement and buildings crowding its edges are silently thinning out the wildflowers, shrubs, and seedlings inside it too.

Researchers looked at 30 small forest patches scattered around a Chinese city and asked how being surrounded by roads, parking lots, and buildings affects the plants living there. They found that the more pavement and hard surfaces cluster around a patch, the fewer plant species survive, both at the forest's edge and deep inside it, even though edge trees often grow taller and bushier. The takeaway: protecting these urban green leftovers means keeping them large, giving them buffer strips of vegetation, and limiting how much concrete presses right up against them.
