Aging mugwort plants recruit busier microbial helpers in their soil

The wild mugwort growing along trails and roadsides is quietly running a soil nutrient factory that gets more active as the plant matures, a reminder that what's happening at a plant's roots changes as much as what you see above ground.

Scientists looked at the soil clinging to the roots of a wild mugwort plant called Artemisia lavandulifolia at two points in its early life: a younger stage and a slightly older one. They found that as the plant aged, the mix of bacteria and fungi around its roots got more diverse and more tightly networked together, and the microbes ramped up activity on genes tied to capturing carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. It's a snapshot of how a plant's growth stage quietly reshapes its underground support crew to match its changing needs.
