Iron-treated charcoal slashes toxic metal in rice grains

Rice grown in soil near old tanneries or industrial sites can quietly absorb chromium, and this cheap biochar amendment made from distillery leftovers offers a practical way to keep that metal out of the grain before it reaches a dinner plate.
Scientists took leftover waste from alcohol distilleries, turned it into charcoal, and treated it with an iron-based compound to create a soil additive. When mixed into chromium-contaminated soil growing rice, this treated charcoal caused iron to build up around the rice roots like a protective rust coating, trapping the toxic metal before it could travel up into the grains. Rice grown this way ended up with 20 times less chromium in its grains compared to untreated contaminated soil.
