Scientists took seawater from very deep parts of the South China Sea and added a nitrogen compound called ammonium to see what would happen. The tiny microbes living in that dark, cold water responded by eating more of the old dissolved carbon and changing which species dominated the community, showing that deep ocean life isn't as inactive as it seems.
