Soap-like compounds supercharge soil microbes' carbon capture ability

The dark, crumbly soil you're building in your compost bin or raised beds gets its richness from carbon-fixing microbes, and this research shows a cheap additive could help those microbes work harder and lock away more carbon underground.
Scientists tested surfactants, the same kind of molecules found in soap, on soil microbes that pull carbon dioxide from the air and turn it into organic matter. They found that one type, called anionic surfactants, made these microbes 59 to 95 percent better at this job by helping them use nutrients more efficiently. When mixed into soil along with the microbes, this boosted the soil's stored organic carbon by 27 to 54 percent, suggesting a promising new way to help soil trap more carbon long-term.
