After 51 years, some mine-site plants soak up cadmium, not vanadium

If you've ever wondered whether tough, drought-hardy plants like sisal or hopbush could help clean up contaminated ground, this study shows some can pull toxic cadmium from soil while barely touching a trickier metal called vanadium.

On an old mine waste site that's been recovering naturally for over 50 years, researchers checked four hardy plants to see how much of two toxic metals, vanadium and cadmium, they soak up from the soil. None of the plants did much with vanadium, but sisal turned out to be great at pulling cadmium up from its roots into its leaves, and a shrub called hopbush built up cadmium in its tissues too. The soil's chemistry, especially its pH and organic matter, seemed to control how much cadmium the plants could grab, while vanadium uptake was more about the plant's own biology.

Sisal (Agave sisalana) had a high cadmium translocation factor of 4.72, moving cadmium efficiently from roots to shoots.

Hopbush (Dodonaea viscosa) accumulated cadmium at 1.71x (roots), 2.29x (stems), and 1.00x (leaves) the average soil concentration.
