Thin scraping, thick spreading: the topsoil trick for regrowing forests

If you've ever moved topsoil to start a new garden bed, this shows that how thin you scrape it up and how thick you lay it down can make or break which plants actually come back.
When companies disturb boreal forest land, they often save the topsoil to help native plants grow back later, since that top layer is packed with seeds and roots ready to sprout. This study found that scraping up just the top 10 centimeters works best, because digging deeper mixes in dead subsoil and waters down the good stuff. But when it comes time to spread that saved soil back out, a thicker layer helps native plants win out over weeds and stops the soil from washing away on slopes.

Shallow salvage depth of 10 cm maximized native plant species richness, density, and canopy cover, especially from fine-textured soils
