Cadmium is a toxic metal that can build up in soil from pollution and gets absorbed by plant roots, eventually working its way into food. This review pulls together what scientists know about how plants sense and neutralize that toxin, from locking it away in cell walls to triggering stress hormones, and shows that tiny microbes living inside the plant, called endophytes, can make those defenses even stronger.
