The groundwater feeding the stream behind your local park could be contaminated with industrial solvents, and this discovery offers a low-cost way to clean it up without expensive lab-grade conditions.
Some bacteria can break down nasty chemical pollutants like chlorinated solvents, but they usually need vitamin B12 and very specific oxygen-free conditions to work, which makes cleanup expensive and finicky. Researchers found a group of bacteria that make their own vitamin B12 and keep working even in messy, real-world conditions like tap water with some oxygen leaking in. When tested at an actual contaminated site, these bacteria successfully colonized the groundwater and reduced pollution levels.

The bacterial consortium NB-12 completely converted 1,2-dichloroethane to harmless ethene within 40 hours at a rate of at least 3.3 μmol/h
Trichlorobacter lovleyi made up over 60% of the community and carries a complete pathway to produce its own vitamin B12, removing the need for costly supplementation
The consortium stayed active in non-sterile, unbuffered tap water with lactate and trace elements, and successfully colonized a real contaminated aquifer, lowering 1,2-DCA levels in the field
