Scientists pulled together ten years of studies on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, a family of pollutants that form whenever something burns incompletely, like a car engine, a barbecue, a cigarette, or a wood fire. These compounds settle into soil, water and air and can cause cancer and birth defects over time. The good news is that certain bacteria, fungi and enzymes can break these pollutants down, offering a natural cleanup path for contaminated ground.
