Heating food waste first makes more clean hydrogen fuel

The food scraps you toss in your compost bin or municipal green bin are part of a waste stream researchers are trying to turn into fuel instead of landfill methane, so how that waste gets treated could eventually shape local composting and waste programs.
Think of food waste, like vegetable peels or spoiled leftovers, as a hidden source of energy. Bacteria can break it down in a process called dark fermentation to release hydrogen gas, which can be used as clean fuel. This review found that simply heating the waste before fermentation works better than chemical or biological pre-treatments, squeezing out more hydrogen per gram of waste.

Thermal (heat-based) pretreatment of food waste was identified as the most effective method among chemical, physical, biological, and combined approaches.
Heat-pretreated food waste achieved hydrogen yields exceeding 300 mL H2 per gram of volatile solids, the highest among methods compared.
