Some pollution, like traces of drugs or personal care chemicals, is too weak on its own to feed the bacteria that could break it down. This review explains how those bacteria often need a second, more abundant food source at the same time, a process called co-metabolism, to get the enzymes going that dismantle the tougher pollutant. Scientists hope that by fine-tuning these microbial partnerships, they can design better cleanup treatments for contaminated soil and water.
