Most plants team up with tiny fungi living in the soil around their roots, called arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and this partnership isn't just about sharing nutrients. When conditions get tough, like drought or salty soil, these fungi help plants pull in water and minerals more efficiently, protect plant cells from damage, and stockpile protective compounds that keep the plant stable under pressure. Scientists still don't fully understand how the plant and fungus coordinate this defense, but it's a major reason some plants shrug off stress that would wilt others.
