Certain peach rootstocks naturally shrink tree size in nurseries

If you grow peaches in a small backyard, the rootstock grafted underneath your tree, not the variety on top, is what decides whether you're fighting a 15-foot giant or tending a manageable dwarf.

Fruit trees are actually two plants joined together: a rootstock below and a fruiting variety grafted on top. This study tested four different peach rootstocks and found that two of them, called Minnesota seedling and Prunus besseyi, naturally produced shorter, less sprawling trees with fewer side branches, while still growing solid root systems and absorbing nutrients well. That means nursery growers can pick a rootstock that gives them a compact tree from the start, instead of relying on heavy pruning later.

Minnesota seedling rootstock reduced tree height by 18% and lateral shoot number by 29% compared to the vigorous Rakonievicka rootstock, while Prunus besseyi reduced height by 17% and shoot number by 41%.

Budding success was highest on Hui-Hun-Tao rootstock (89.7%) and with the 'Harnaś' cultivar (86.0%) versus 'RedHaven' (82.7%).

Despite its dwarfing effect, Prunus besseyi produced a root system as developed as the vigorous Hui-Hun-Tao rootstock, while Minnesota seedling trees had lower leaf calcium and fewer roots (8.7).
