Soaking wheat seeds in urea helps, but only in wet years

If you grow vegetables or grain from seed in a dry-summer garden, this three-year field trial shows that a cheap pre-planting soak can boost your harvest in a good rain year but might backfire and stress seedlings faster in a drought year.

Farmers sometimes soak seeds in nutrient solutions before planting to help them sprout faster, a trick called seed priming. This study tested wheat seeds soaked in things like urea, calcium chloride, and zinc sulfate over three growing seasons and found the treatments made plants taller, greener, and more productive, but only in the season with more rain. In the driest season, the primed seeds actually sprouted and grew so fast that they used up the available soil moisture too soon, leading to more seedling deaths than plants grown from untreated seeds.
