Silicon shots help sugarcane shrug off salty water

If you garden in an area with hard or salty tap water, this points to a low-cost mineral treatment that helps thirsty crops like sugarcane cope, and the same silicon-boosting principle shows up in products used on backyard vegetables too.
Farmers often have to irrigate with leftover drainage water that's saltier than what plants prefer, and that salt stunts growth and damages plant cells. Researchers found that dosing sugarcane with silicon, especially a full month before the salty water arrives, helps the plant stay hydrated and ramps up its internal defense enzymes so it handles the stress much better. The timing mattered a lot: silicon applied early worked far better than silicon added during or after the salt exposure.
Key Findings
Salinity at 4.1 and 8.2 dS/m cut stem weight by 37% and 66% and photosynthesis by 28% and 42% compared to control irrigation.
Silicon applied one month before salt stress was the most effective timing, boosting catalase activity by up to 88.9% and ascorbate peroxidase by up to 115% under high salinity.
Moderately salty drainage water (about 4 dS/m) could still be used for full-season irrigation without major harm to sugarcane growth.
